As summer storms approach, you might find yourself caught in a thunderstorm. The loud rumbling can sound terrifying, but it cannot harm anyone on its own. It’s companion, however, has proven to be very damaging and dangerous. Lighting. It’s important to understand how lightning works and how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe during a storm. We’ve compiled 5 key things to remember when lightning strikes to keep you out of harm’s way.
1. Don’t use electronics
When you’re sheltered inside during a thunderstorm, it’s important to remember electrical wires are great conductors of lightning. That means wireless devices, not just corded appliances can be very dangerous.
2. Stay away from water indoors
Avoiding water usage in your home is crucial during a thunderstorm. The metal pipes your water runs through are a perfect conductor for lightning. Refrain from using any appliances that involve water such as washing machines or dishwashers. You should also avoid using sinks or showers until the storm passes.
3. Avoid windows and doors
When sheltered in your room, do your best to stay away from windows, doors and even skylights. Thunderstorms are powerful and can produce damaging hail. There’s a possibility with strong wind gusts and hail, that your windows could shatter. You’ll want to avoid shattering glass at all costs. Be sure to close your curtains or blinds to help contain possible glass shards.
4. Don’t use a bicycle or motorcycle
If you find yourself stuck outside, do your best to find an enclosed structure. Don’t lean on a vehicle for shelter, as metal is a conductor of lightning. Instead, crouch down. Put your head between your knees. This enables you to become a smaller target for lightning strikes. If you’re in a car, try to shelter in a large, enclosed structure such as a parking garage.
5. Bring your pets inside
Remember, if you have an animal that is usually kept outside, it’s a good idea to bring them in until the storm passes. Dog houses can be struck by lightning and dogs can be injured. As wind, rain or hail is produced, you’ll want your beloved pet to be sheltered inside with you.
